I made this video of the students on Halloween! Today we watched it and they thought it was so funny that they asked me to share it with moms and dads. Some of the students were being shy and did not want to be in the video. Maybe next time they will join in:)

Happy Halloween!
I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween tonight! Here are some pictures of some of the activities that we worked on this week:)
We made alphabet stew!
Sorting buttons!

We made alphabet stew!
We put upper and lower case letters in the pot with pictures of ghosts, bats and pumpkins. The students had to stir the pot and choose a letter. Then they had to say the sound that the letter makes. If they got a bat, ghost, or pumpkin they had to say the first letter in that word. For an additional challenge, they could say a word that begins with that letter of any of the letters chosen. Here are some pictures of us making Alphabet Stew!
The students also participated in some new centers. Here they are writing letters in sand using a paintbrush.
Working together to build!
Sitting down for "dinner"!

Halloween is tomorrow!
For Halloween tomorrow the AM kindergarten students are welcome to wear their costumes to school! There are just a few KDT rules to note:
- Please keep your child’s costume simple - something that they can do themselves (i.e. no makeup - save that part for when they go out in the evening)
- Pleasant, fun costumes please - no violence - no blood/gore
- Masks are okay as long as student can easily see through them for safety
- We will have a costume parade in the morning that will have all students moving throughout the school
- Students are welcome to bring an additional (special) snack as after the costume parade they will be invited to have their special snack and do some fun ‘Halloween Learning’ (i.e. we are not having class parties)
Please let me know if you have any further questions! tkcarstairs@cbe.ab.ca
Happy Halloween!

Kid Writing!
The Kindergarten students have started to write in their journals. We started by talking about how 'Kid Writing' looks different than 'adult' or 'book' writing and that we all have to keep practicing until we can one day write like our parents and teachers!
The important part to stress is that we are rewarding the students' attempts to sound out and write words in their journals to match their pictures.
The students choose what to write about by first drawing a picture. They should choose topics that they're interested in and know well. Then they can use our A is for Apple song visuals to help them remember the letter sounds that they might want to write.

Sometimes children's first attempts at writing might look like scribbles or symbols. Other times they may consist of a string of letters that the students knows how to write. Typically we start with labeling our pictures, as attempting a sentence would be overwhelming! This is all a step on the way to 'book' writing as the student is demonstrating that they recognize that letters are symbols and that words have meaning when we see them in a book or in our environment. We should encourage their progress and support them in developing accuracy as they move along.
Here are some examples of our Kid Writing! I have gone through and added in the 'book' writing below the kid writing so the students know what they will eventually be able to do:)
The students have also continued to recognize the letters in their names and participate in a variety of name-building activities during centers. We even used AlphaBits for a fun, hands-on way to recognize the letters of our names and put them in order. Other activities include beading with letter beads, building with foam letter shapes, building with stickers (this also helps our fine motor skills!) and circling the letters on the SmartBoard.
Here are some pictures of the students practicing this skill!

CORRECTION-PLEASE READ!
I am so sorry for any confusion; I mistakenly said that AM kindergarten has school tomorrow and that is incorrect.
On October 24th we have school and we will be doing a Fall walk.
There is NO SCHOOL tomorrow, October 18th for AM Kindergarten.
I am so sorry for the confusion!
See everyone on Monday!
