How to teach your child to use 'Kid Writing'

Our Week of Learning

Just a reminder that today is a PD (professional development) day for the teachers so we will be attending online sessions and meetings. I am still available by email but this is why there is no weekly outline sent out yet. Your child's weekly outline of activities will be sent out tomorrow (Tuesday, April 14).

I hope everyone had some family time this weekend and I look forward to connecting with you all this week:)

Happy Easter!

Dear Kindergarten families,

This Easter weekend, I hope that you are all able to enjoy some time with your families.

I know that the online learning has been a huge change for all of us and that we are still adjusting. I just wanted to say that the learning plans that I send you weekly are 'emergency learning' due to the unprecedented times in which we find ourselves, and that I do not want these activities to be an additional stress to your families. If there are ever activities lined out that are not possible for your child to complete due to lack of resources at home, computers being used for other purposes, or just due to the fact that your are feeling overwhelmed, please know that I will understand that things don't always go as planned and try not to worry.

My number one priority is for the health and happiness of my students and their families, and that includes our mental health. We are not actively 'assessing' their work at this time but I can't express how much I enjoy receiving pictures and notes from the students. It is a little light in my sometimes difficult days.

I made a 'how-to' video for making Easter sugar cookies! This is not part of our traditional 'learning' and is just for fun, in the case that you and your child/children are able and would like to join in and have some fun making cookies:) You'd be surprised how much learning is involved in these daily activities that we engage in every day and that our young students can benefit from.

Please give my students (your children!) a BIG hug from me and let them know that I think of them daily and I miss them very much. I look forward to the day when I will see them in the halls of Ken Taylor School and get to catch up and find out how much they've grown.

Big Hugs,
Mrs. Moore

A message from Mrs. Moore...

Hello my sweet Kindergarten students and families,

I have been trying to put together a video for you all but have been having a lot of technology/compatibility problems with my devices from home. So until I figure that out, I wanted to reach out with a typed message at least.

First, we have been asked to provide the following message regarding continuation of learning:

“At this time, we are waiting to hear from the system level what the next steps will be in regards to future programming for our students. Information will be communicated as soon as we know more from the Calgary Board of Education. This is a new situation for everyone and we want to assure you that the school will be communicating this information to our families as soon as we have a plan and procedures in place. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

“In the meantime, the CBE has put together some resources until a long range plan is in place.  To access the resources, please click on the linkhttps://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx.”

Please feel free to email, even if it's just to say 'hi' or share a picture! Hopefully I will get the technology problems sorted out and then I will be able to share some videos and pictures to keep the kinders' spirits up! tkcarstairs@cbe.ab.ca

Know that I miss all of you very much, but I know that you are smart cookies and that you will be able to show your parent/parents all the things that you have learned in kindergarten so far!

After Spring Break there will be more information regarding possible online learning. In the interim please stay safe and healthy and be kind to one another.

Big hugs,
Mrs. Moore

P.S. Frank says 'stay home and stay healthy!' x

Student Led Conferences - Postponed

Student Led Conferences have been postponed

Dear Parents,

Based on the changing provincial and local response to COVID-19, the CBE has given us direction to postpone our Student Led Conferences scheduled for March 19 and 20.  Please note that Thursday, March 19 is still an early dismissal day for students in grades 1 to 4.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00 pm on that day.  There is no school for Kindergarten students on March 19 and there is no school for all students on March 20.

All CBE schools have been given direction to postpone or cancel events that include populations from other schools and/or parents or other community members, such as Parent-Teacher Interviews, celebrations of learning, drama/musical performances, dances, athletic competitions, etc. This decision is effective from Mar. 12 until the end of March break. This decision will be revisited during March break to determine whether events should be rescheduled.

Events outside of school hours that include the regular student and staff population of the school (school clubs, practices, etc) and scheduled field trips may continue at this time.

I know this may be disappointing news. Students and staff have spent a significant amount of time preparing for this event, but the health of our community is our priority.

For the most up to date information about the CBE’s approach to COVID-19 and the actions we are taking, please visit our website. Answers to frequently asked questions will continue to be posted as information becomes available.

Thank you,
Todd Faunt
Principal

Our Learning

The students have asked that I share one of their favourite videos with parents on the blog! The following video explains syllables in a kid-friendly way. Syllables are an element of phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate phonemes-or units of sounds). Our class has been working on a variety of phonemic awareness skills such as rhyming, distinguishing the beginning and ending sounds of words, segmenting a sentence, and syllables. These skills are all important building blocks in reading and spelling success.

You can find the video on syllables HERE.

Here are some pictures from last week of our writing about Pink Shirt Day and new center activities.

Helmets for inline skating

Just a reminder to send your child to school with a helmet (bike helmet is fine) for the next two days for inline skating! I have asked the students to keep the helmets at school until Wednesday (although I had a few who insisted mom said don't leave it at school :))! so it may or may not have come home today:)

Thanks!

Wet Felting Activity

On Thursday the students were able to participate in a very fun, felt craft! Kerry from Artfelt Studio came and taught the students about where wool comes from and how it's processed and used. We then took some felt and created beautiful heart projects. The students will be able to bring their creations home on Monday when they are fully dry.

Here are some pictures of us creating our projects:

Have a great weekend and I will see everyone on Monday:)

Our Learning!

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and family day with their loved ones.

Today we listened to Pete the Cat's 4 Groovy Buttons song. The students LOVE this song! Here is the link:

Pete the Cat's 4 Groovy Buttons

After we completed a guided drawing of Pete the Cat. Then each student got a die and a handful of buttons to roll the die and place the same number of buttons onto their drawing of Pete the Cat. We also discussed rhyming words in the song.

Here are some pics of us working:

If students needed an additional challenge they could use two dice and add the two numbers together.

Home Reading and Sight Words:

As promised at conferences home reading and a list of sight or 'pop-up' words will be coming home this week.

Library:

Due to our wet felting project on Thursday, we will switch our library time to tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th. Please assist your child in placing their library book into their bag tonight so that they may exchange it for a new one tomorrow!

No school Friday:

It is a short week for us as there is no school for AM Kindergarten this Friday.

Have a lovely week!

Volunteers!

I am still in need of some volunteers for February 20th when the Kindergarten students will be doing a wet felting project. It will take place in class from 8:00-10:50. Please let me know if you are able to help out by sending me an email! There are no forms required for this one since it's in-class.

THANK YOU in advance!

Mrs. Moore

Library TOMORROW!

Hi parents and guardians,

Please note that due to convention this Thursday and Friday there is no school for all students. As this conflicts with our usual library due I have switched it to this Wednesday the 12th. Please assist your child in locating their library book and placing it in their backpack tonight!

Also we will be handing out Valentine's tomorrow if your child wishes to participate. Please note CBE has a policy that encourages healthy snacks and treats as opposed to sending cupcakes, cakes, etc. We are not having a 'party' but rather will continue our learning with a Valentine's Day theme. I will post pictures after for you to enjoy:)
